lyrics

It's been a couple years since we spent a couple years
Barely talking, a mockery
Of dialogue between two people who wouldn't know - who couldn't know -
That impossibly, somehow, someday,
The words would all rush out and they would carry them away

Through frosty nights, and blue screen lights
We conversated, contemplated
Sifting through all the possibilities
Of what could be with you and me
What could have happened, what might have been
I'm glad we're in the place we're in
The words that carried us through the weather
Put us in this place together

It's been a couple years since we spent a couple years
Talking all the time, and every time, I would be amazed
At how you took my heart and read it like page straight from a book
That you had partially co-authored, and that was all it took

Before I realized we were friends
And with all the odds and ends that came with it, like
"How was your day?" "Are you okay?" I've never felt this way before
I've never been so open and accepted in my skin
We paved friendship over aches and bruises no matter how hard it had been

It's been a couple years since we spent a couple years
Talking nonstop, tick tock
The clock was dropping through the floor
And my heart was close behind it, because
He ran away with yours
And I could never find the time or place to forgive you face to face

It took a while to reconcile that you were still my friend
And all the memories we had created wouldn't end, bend, or break
But while my heart was aching, a part of me was waking up
To the fact that we'd be fine
I had you, and you had me, and our friendship would still shine

It's been a couple days since we spent a couple hours
Smelling flowers on the bench behind the bridge
Beneath the clouds
Just talking and watching the birds fly by
Nothing gold can stay, and so the sun began to die

And yet, somehow, I think friendship is worth more
Than all the gold, silver, platinum, and iron inside the earth's core
It'll last you far longer than the stars up in the sky
Both burning bright throughout the night, but our love will never die
